May gets legal backstop hope

Theresa May has secured some legally binding changes to the backstop contract with the EU. Having gone to a last-minute summit with Jean Claude-Juncker in Strasbourg, May revealed last night that there had been some late-night progress that means that the UK can leave the backstop, and also potentially take the EU to court over the same problem on the island of Ireland. The most important people in Westminster now are the DUP, who say that they are now considering their position, among pressure from many in Northern Ireland. The lawyers hired by the ERG will go over the new documents this morning at 9, but Steve Baker said on the World Tonight yesterday that the new breakthrough did not go far enough.
