May attempts final backstop changes

Theresa May is attempting to win over both Remainers and Leavers in her own party to get support around the so-called ‘Malthouse Compromise.’ This gets rid of the backstop and replaces it with ‘alternative arrangements.’ The EU, however, show no signs of budging out of their position as it stands, despite constant pressure from No10.

There is no alternative to the backstop that does not include a hard border. It just does not exist. Even with technology, there has to be a check, however short, at the border. The backstop stops this ever having to take place, and it will almost certainly never come into play, Gerry says…
