EU are ‘united’ around not reopening negotiations

After the Graham Brady amendment to get rid of the backstop was passed in the Commons yesterday, Theresa May has seemingly got a forlorn hope that the EU might actually reopen the negotiations and the two parties might jointly come up with some sort of ‘alternative arrangement,’ although it is uncertain what that would be. It was an unconventional win for Mrs May last night, with Yvette Cooper and Rachel Reeves amendments defeated, among others, but the Government-backed proposal to change the Withdrawal Agreement did win enough support. Whether the EU will budge is yet another matter.
