May attempts to win over hardline Brexiteers

Theresa May has decided to attempt to win over her fellow Tory rebels instead of Labour MPs to vote for her deal when it returns to the Commons in the next few weeks. After the cross-party discussions with Labour, the Lib Dems and the SNP over the end of last week proved futile, May has chosen the advice of her Chief Whip, Julian Smith, over that of her Chief of Staff, Gavin Barwell. Barwell was trying to persuade her to placate Labour MPs by hovering over the idea of a permanent Customs Union, as detailed by Tim Shipman in yesterday’s Sunday Times, but has chosen to follow the advice of her man in the Commons instead.
