Throughout much of the Brexit process, the international press has presented Britain as a country on the edge of a cliff, with medicines being stockpiled and rationing coming back soon. This hyperbole has been ignored by the New York Times today as they summarise the May premiership up to this crucial point.
‘She could have been the perfect person to carry out a message of compromise . She is an old-fashioned English public servant, devoid of bombast and rhetorical flourish, and uninterested in personal power. She has not created the churning whirlpool of ideology and grievance around Brexit and this gave her some authority to bring it to an end.’
