The Attorney General, Geoffrey Cox has told the Commons, while simultaneously doing a particularly impressive Churchill impression, that the backstop planned for an indefinite amount of time after March next year is not the ‘preferable’ option, but that he urges MPs to back the deal as it is a safety net around the Good Friday Agreement. Cox also said that if the trade talks with Brussels break down, the backstop could continue for a long time to come, meaning that the UK has to obey EU customs laws.
