Theresa May had an easy time tonight in a ‘showdown’ with the 1922 Committee of Conservative backbenchers as former dissenters showed themselves as loyalists. The usual banging of desks resumed and the leader seemed confident after a good Prime Minister’s Question Time this lunchtime. It seems as though the quest from some to get the 48 letters that would create a no-confidence vote is failing, as the European Research Group is impressively unable to mobilise forces.
